Lesson 1  Have a Great Trip!

Lee is taking a trip to Australia during his winter vacation.  李要在寒假期間前往澳洲旅遊。

Part One

Lee is speaking to a flight attendant on the way to Sydney. Lee: Excuse me. I’m really thirsty. Can I get something to drink? F.A.: Sure. What would you like? Lee:  Some mineral water will be fine, thanks. F.A.: I’ll be right back. (A while later) Here you go. Lee: Thank you. By the way, there’s something wrong with my in-flight entertainment system. I can’t hear anything. F.A.: Let me get you another headset. If it still doesn’t work, you can switch seats. There are some empty ones a few rows back. Lee: That’s great. Thank you very much. F.A.:  You’re welcome.

Part Two

Lee has arrived at the airport in Sydney. He is speaking to an immigration officer. I.O.: Good morning. Welcome to Australia. May I see your passport, please? Lee: Here it is. I.O.: Thank you. What is the purpose of your visit? Lee: I’m here on vacation. I.O.: OK. And how long are you planning to stay in Australia? Lee: Three weeks. I.O.: Where will you be staying? Lee: In Brisbane, to begin with. I have a hotel reservation there. I.O.: So you need to transfer. When is your connecting flight? Lee: In a couple of hours. I.O.: OK. Here is your passport. Have a pleasant vacation. Lee: Thanks.

Part Three

Lee is taking a taxi from Brisbane airport. The driver chats with him. Lee: Hello. To the Rockford Hotel, please. T.D.:OK. (A few minutes later) So what brings you to Brisbane? Lee: I want to do some sightseeing. T.D.:Great. Most tourists just go to Sydney, though. Have you been there? Lee: I’m going there after a couple of days. But first I want to see Brisbane and Gold Coast. T.D.:Well, if I were you, I’d also take a boat trip to see the Great Barrier Reef. It’s a fantastic place. Lee: I might do that. Thanks for the tip.

Part Four

Lee has arrived at his hotel. Clerk: Good evening. Do you have a reservation? Lee: Yes. The name is Lee. I booked it online. Clerk: Let me see. Yes, a single room for three nights. Please fill out and sign this form. And may I see your passport? Lee: Here you are. Clerk: Thank you, Mr. Lee. You’re in Room 516. Here’s your keycard. If you need anything, dial zero on the phone to talk to the front desk. Lee: OK. Thank you very much. Clerk: You’re welcome. Enjoy your stay.

Lesson 2  When Julie Met Barry

第一段:  Men and women often think in different ways. This story about Julie and Barry is a good example.       Julie had a date with Barry at 7:30 pm. Naturally, she started getting ready around five. She took a shower, washed her hair, and applied her makeup. Then she began considering her clothes for the evening. At 7:15, just as Julie was making her final choice, Barry turned off the TV in his own apartment. He threw on some pants, a clean shirt, and a jacket, and went out.

男人和女人經常以不同模式思考。茱麗和貝利的故事就是一個好例子。 茱麗晚上七點半要和貝利約會。自然地，她從大約五點就開始準備。她沖了個澡、洗頭髮和化妝。然後她開始考慮晚上要穿的衣服。七點十五分，正當茱麗還在做最後決定時，貝利關掉自己公寓的電視機。他迅速套上褲子、乾淨的襯衫和夾克就出門了。

第二段      At 8:00, Barry was sitting in the restaurant and looking impatiently at his watch. “Are girls always so late?” he thought. “If I’d known better, I would have come later.” When she finally arrived, they started to order some food. Julie just couldn’t make up her mind, however. “Why are girls so indecisive?” thought Barry.

八點時，貝利坐在餐廳，不耐煩地看著錶。「女生總是這麼晚到嗎？」他想。「如果早知道這樣，我就晚一點再來。」當茱麗終於到達，他們開始點吃的。然而，茱麗就是拿不定主意。「為什麼女生這麼舉棋不定？」貝利想。

第三段      After they ordered, Julie asked him a question. “Do I look different tonight?” she said. Barry stared at her for a while, then shrugged. “He didn’t even notice my new hairstyle,” thought Julie. “What a typical guy! They never pay attention to details I wouldn’t have spent so much time on it if I’d known that.”

在他們點餐後，茱麗問他一個問題。「我今晚看起來有什麼不同嗎？」貝利注視了她一會兒，然後聳聳肩。「他甚至沒注意到我的新髮型。」茱麗心想。「真是典型的臭男生！他們從來不注意細節。如果早知道這樣，我就不用大費周章了。」

第四段      During the meal, as Julie made all the conversation, Barry looked at her. “She talks too much,” he thought. “Are all girls like this?” Julie kept on speaking, but Barry wasn’t really listening. She knew it, and was a little annoyed. “Why don’t boys listen to girls properly?” she asked herself.

吃飯的時候，當茱麗滔滔不絕，貝利看著她。「她話太多了。」他想。「所有的女生都像這樣嗎？」茱麗講個不停，但貝利並沒有真的聽進去。她心知肚明，而且覺得有點生氣。「男生為什麼就是不能好好聽女生說話？」她自問。

第五段      After the meal, Julie suggested going to see a new romantic comedy, but Barry wanted to see an action movie. “How unromantic boys are!” she thought. Julie was a bit disappointed by the date. But when Barry walked her home and gave her a goodnight kiss, Julie thought, “It wasn’t a bad evening, on the whole. I’ll call Alicia and get her opinion.”

餐後，茱麗建議去看一部新的愛情喜劇電影，但是貝利想看動作片。「男生真的很不浪漫耶！」她想。茱麗對這次約會感到一點點失望。但當貝利陪她走回家，然後給她一個道再見的晚安吻，茱麗心想，「整體來看，今晚還不算太差。我要打電話給艾麗西亞徵詢她的意見。」

第六段      When Barry arrived home, however, Julie was already out of his thoughts. He had another date, this time with Carla Strong, the heroine of his new computer game. “At least Carla doesn’t talk all the time,” he said to himself.

然而，當貝利回到家，茱麗已經不在他的腦海裡了。他有另一個約會，這次是跟卡拉史壯，他的新電玩女主角。「至少卡拉不會話說個不停。」他自言自語道。

Lesson  3 The Last Supper

第一段      The Last Supper, like the Mona Lisa, is a very famous painting by the great Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci. It is a much larger work than the Mona Lisa, and was painted on an indoor wall in a monastery in Milan, Italy, between 1495 and 1497. The Last Supper is a religious work about the final meal Jesus Christ had with his followers before he was arrested and killed.

和《蒙娜麗莎的微笑》一樣，《最後的晚餐》是偉大的義大利藝術家李奧納多‧達文西非常著名的畫作。它的篇幅比《蒙娜麗莎的微笑》大了許多，於1495至1497年間繪於義大利米蘭一間修道院室內的牆壁。《最後的晚餐》是一幅宗教作品，畫的是關於耶穌基督被逮捕並殺害前，和他的門徒們共進的最後的一餐。

第二段      In the scene, Christ has just told his followers he will leave them soon, and one of them will betray him. That they are shocked and disbelieving is shown on their faces. Their emotions are clear from their expressions. What’s more, people who are familiar with the Bible may recognize some of the figures. The painting is also made more realistic by the clever use of perspective, which gives the scene a 3D effect, like in a real room.

在畫中，耶穌剛告訴他的弟子他很快會要離開他們，而且他們其中一人會背叛他。他們震驚和不可置信的神情全展現在臉上。他們的表情清楚透露出情緒。此外，熟悉聖經的人可能認得出一些人物。這幅畫也因為巧妙地運用透視畫法而更顯得逼真，這讓場景有3D的效果，彷彿真的在房間裡。

第三段      According to some stories about Leonardo, he used real people as models for some of Christ’s followers, and he walked around Milan in search of suitable faces. He himself might be one of the figures. Also, it is said that the prior of the monastery complained that the painting was taking too long to finish. The artist was angered by this as he liked to take his time. Supposedly, he used the prior’s face as Judas, the man who betrayed Christ. He is the fourth from the left in the painting.

根據一些關於李奧納多的故事，他使用了真人作為模特兒，來畫耶穌的門徒，而且他在米蘭各地漫步，尋找合適的面孔。他自己可能就是其中一個人物。還有，據說修道院的院長曾抱怨這幅畫花太久的時間完成。這樣的抱怨讓達文西感到生氣，因為他喜歡從容作畫。據說，他用這位院長的面孔來當猶大，也就是背叛耶穌的人。他是這幅畫左邊數來第四位。

第四段      The Last Supper is one of the world’s most famous paintings, and its location in Milan is a popular tourist spot. The picture is also one of the most studied. Many people believe the painting contains hidden messages and unsolved mysteries. One strange thing is that Christ and his followers are eating supper as the sun shines brightly outside. No one knows why. Can you figure it out?

《最後的晚餐》是世上最著名的畫作之一，畫的所在地米蘭是熱門的觀光景點。這幅畫也是最常被研究的其中一幅。許多人相信這幅畫裡暗藏著訊息和未解之謎。有一件奇怪的事，就是耶穌和他的門徒用晚餐的時候外頭正豔陽高照。沒有人知道這是為什麼。你能明白是為什麼嗎？

Lesson  4 A King in Danger

第一段 Tiger, tiger, burning bright In the forests of the night ...      This is the beginning of an English poem that was written over 200 years ago. It describes the great power and beauty of the tiger. This amazing animal can weigh up to 360 kilograms and run at over 60 kilometers an hour. Its roar can be heard three kilometers away, yet it can be as quiet as a mouse. Tigers are great hunters, so why are there so few of them now? More than 100,000 tigers lived in the forests, mountains, and marshes of Asia when this poem was written. At present, there are only about 3,200 in the wild.

老虎！老虎！熊熊地燃燒 在黑夜的森林……      這是在兩百多年前寫的一首英文詩的開頭。它描述了老虎的力與美。這種令人讚嘆的動物可以重達三六○公斤，奔跑的時速超過六○公里。牠的吼聲可以在三公里外聽到，卻又可以安靜得像老鼠一樣。老虎擅長狩獵，那麼為什麼現有的數量卻如此之少？寫這首詩時，有超過十萬隻老虎生活在森林、山嶺和亞洲的沼澤地區。目前，野外只剩下大約三千二百隻老虎。

第二段      Human behavior, of course, is what has put tigers on the list of endangered animals. People have caused tiger numbers to fall through hunting and destruction of their natural habitats. Killing tigers is no longer legal, but it still happens. Their beautiful coats are highly valued on some black markets, and their body parts are used to make traditional medicine. What’s more, as human populations have grown, tigers have been forced out of their habitats. Where they now live covers a much smaller area. In fact, it is just seven percent of what it was 100 years ago.

老虎名列瀕危動物的榜單當然是人類的行為所造成的。人們經由獵捕和破壞其自然棲息地，造成老虎的數量減少。殺老虎不再合法，但仍時而發生。牠們美麗的毛皮在一些黑市可以賣到很高的價錢，而身體部位被用來做傳統的藥材。更重要的，隨著人口數不斷成長，老虎已經被迫離開牠們的棲息地了。牠們現在生活的涵蓋面積小了許多。事實上，只有一百年前的百分之七。

第三段      Conservation organizations have been trying hard to protect tigers. Most countries where tigers are found have set up nature reserves, and the World Wildlife Fund has set a goal of doubling the number of tigers in the wild by 2022. The tiger is still in danger of extinction, however. In fact, ordinary people can help by donating money and refusing to buy their body parts. We must all do what we can if we want this glorious king of the forest to carry on “burning bright” in the future.

保育組織一直努力在保護老虎。大多數可以發現老虎的國家都設立了自然保護區，而且世界自然基金會設定目標，要在二○二二年讓野生老虎的數量增加一倍。然而，老虎仍然面臨滅絕的危險。其實，一般人可以捐款並且拒絕購買老虎的身體部位來幫助老虎。如果我們希望這美麗的森林之王未來能持續閃耀熊熊的光芒，我們必須盡其所能。

Lesson  5 The Taj Mahal: Crown of Palaces

第一段      Some buildings are so famous that they can represent a whole country. In the case of India, this building is without question the Taj Mahal. It is often called one of the new seven wonders of the world. The Taj Mahal stands in Agra, and is made of the finest white marble. It was completed in 1654, and has a large white “onion dome,” which is around 35 meters high and surrounded by four smaller domes. Though it looks like a palace, the Taj Mahal is actually a tomb, and has a special love story behind it.

有一些建築物著名的程度足以象徵整個國家。就印度來說，其代表建築無疑就是泰姬瑪哈陵。它常被稱為世界新七大奇蹟之一。泰姬瑪哈陵位於阿格拉市，用上好的白色大理石打造而成。完工於1654年，有一座巨大的白色「洋蔥式圓頂」，高約35公尺，周圍環繞四個較小的圓頂。雖然泰姬陵看起來像皇宮，但其實是一座陵寢，而且背後還藏著一段特別的愛情故事。

第二段      India was once ruled by the emperor Shah Jahan. When he was still a prince, he married a Persian princess. After he became emperor, he gave her a new name: Mumtaz Mahal, which means “Jewel of the Palace.” Shah Jahan was deeply in love with her, and nothing could separate them. Wherever Shah Jahan went, he took his beloved Mumtaz with him. When she tragically died in childbirth in 1631, he was heartbroken.

印度曾經是皇帝沙賈汗的天下。當他還是王子時，娶了一名波斯公主。登基為皇帝後，他賜給公主一個新的名字：慕塔芝瑪哈，意思是「皇宮之珠」。沙賈汗跟公主深深相愛，沒有什麼可以分開他們。無論沙賈汗去哪裡，他總是帶著心愛的慕塔芝隨行。1631年當她不幸難產過世，他悲痛欲絕。

第三段      Shah Jahan was overcome with terrible grief, and swore he would never forget Mumtaz. He would do whatever was necessary to keep her memory alive. The year after her death, he began to build a magnificent tomb as her final resting place. He gathered the best builders and finest materials from all over, and the tomb took 22 years to complete.

沙賈汗深陷悲傷難以自拔，他發誓永遠不會忘記慕塔芝。為了讓關於她的記憶長存，他願意不惜一切。她去世後的隔年，他開始建造一座宏偉的陵寢作為她的安息之地。他從各地召集來最好的建築工人和上等建材，花了二十二年才大功告成。

第四段      Shah Jahan demanded perfection, and most people would agree he got it. The area around the Taj Mahal contains a beautiful garden, a mosque, a pool that reflects the building beautifully, and the tomb of Shah Jahan himself, who wished to be buried with his wife. Now, it is India’s most famous tourist site, and attracts millions of visitors. Its name means “crown of palaces,” and it stands as a lasting monument to an emperor’s undying love.

沙賈汗要求完美，大部分的人也都承認他做到了。泰姬瑪哈陵周圍有一個漂亮的花園、一間清真寺和一個可以完美反射整棟建築物的水池，以及沙賈汗自己的墓，他希望能跟妻子合葬在一起。現今，它是印度最有名的觀光景點，吸引了數以百萬計的遊客。泰姬瑪哈的意思是「皇宮之冠」，而它就像一座屹立不搖的紀念碑，見證皇帝至死不渝的愛情。

Lesson  6 Print-It-Yourself

第一段      You have probably had a bad shopping experience or two. You go to buy clothes, furniture, or sports equipment, for example, and you can’t find exactly what you want. So, you settle for something similar but different. You could order custom-made items, but they will most likely be expensive. There is a way to make them much cheaper, though. Do you know what to do?

你可能曾經有過一兩次不愉快的購物經驗。比如說，你去買衣服、家具或運動設備，卻找不到完全符合自己想要的東西。所以，你只好妥協，買了個類似但卻不一樣的東西。你可以訂作客製化商品，但是卻很有可能非常昂貴。不過，其實有個方式可以讓這些物品便宜很多。你知道怎麼做嗎？

第二段      The answer is simple: Print them yourself. The latest technology of 3D printing is able to take digital files and transform them into real products. Though the method was invented in 1983, it is only recently that 3D printers have been regularly used to make everyday things. They can produce different kinds of objects, with different materials, all from the same machine.

答案很簡單：自己印。最新的3D列印技術就是能將數位化的檔案轉換成真實的產品。雖然這個方法早在一九八三就發明了，但是直到最近3D印表機才經常被用來製造日常生活的物品。它們可以用不同的原料製造不同種類的東西，而且全都出自同一台機器。

第三段      How does 3D printing work? You get started by designing a 3D object on an ordinary PC. You connect it to a 3D printer, press “print” and then watch an amazing process. 3D printing turns a whole object into thousands of tiny slices, and then makes it layer by layer, from the bottom up. The layers stick together to form a solid object. 3D printers can create moving parts like wheels. In fact, you could print a whole bicycle with a 3D printer, or even a car! No matter what it is, it could be 3D printable someday.

3D列印是怎麼印的？一開始先在一般普通的電腦上設計3D物品，然後把電腦連到3D印表機，按下「列印」的按鈕，然後就可以觀賞一個令人嘖嘖稱奇的過程。3D列印把一個完整的物品分成數以千計的細微部分，然後從底部一層一層往上製作出來。這些層次堆疊起來就會形成立體的成品。3D印表機可以創造像是輪子的活動零件。事實上，你可以用3D印表機印出一整台腳踏車或甚至一部車子！不管是什麼，總有一天都有可能可以用3D列印的方式製造出來。

第四段      Without doubt, 3D printing is one of the most exciting new developments in technology, and it has great potential. It has already been used to print such things as space rocket engines, five-story office buildings, and artificial arms and legs for disabled people. It is changing manufacturing, and helping to create a world where anyone can design and build what they want. With 3D printing, the future is looking very exciting.

3D列印無疑是最讓人期待的科技新發展之一，而且潛力雄厚。目前它已經被使用來印製像是太空火箭的引擎、五層樓高的辦公大樓以及給身障人士使用的義肢。它正在改變製造業，並且幫助打造一個人人都可以將自己想要的東西設計並創作出來的世界。有了3D列印，未來看起來會非常精彩。
